HAC HAS BIG NEWS!
We have launched a crowd funding campaign to assist our organization with ever rising operational costs.
Please help support HAC by donating AND helping spread the word by sharing on your social media sites and encouraging your friends and family to donate!
The Homeless Action Committee (HAC) needs your support. HAC operates two programs serving the homeless. The first is “Our House”, which has 30 rooms of Single Room Occupancy (SRO) housing and serves the most chronically homeless, who are alcoholics who drank 24/7 and lived outside on the streets. The SRO saves lives and taxpayers money by offering a cost effective alternative to jails and hospitals. Now, HAC’s tenants are maintaining unprecedented stability and staying an average of 7 years!! Many tenants have dramatically improved their sobriety and their physical and mental health.
The SRO is a community with a family and caring atmosphere. Many funders have toured the building and remarked at how the SRO isn’t your typical housing and is more like a community. HAC staff care greatly about our tenants. Our SRO is a safe and supportive place for tenants to come home to.
The second program HAC operates is our Outreach Van program, which works directly with people on the streets of Albany. Van staff provide compassionate human contact, a listening ear, basic needs (food, clothing, and blankets), and referrals and transportation to area services. The community calls upon the van to help homeless individuals. In the winter, HAC’s Outreach Van is instrumental in ensuring that everyone has a safe place to stay on cold winter nights and has saved lives!
What We Need
HAC’s budget calls for us to raise $120,000 annually in private donations. Our maintenance costs are drowning us and impacting overall operations. The building and van continue to age and more problems arise. Your donation will cover essential operating and maintenance costs for our programs!
Your donation will help our tenants continue to come home to a safe place and keep them off the streets. Keeping the building in good shape helps ensure that this housing program will last long into the future. In addition, our Outreach Van will ensure that people still outside on the streets continue being helped with a reliable and practical vehicle.
Consider Kendal, who started drinking at 8 and lived outside for 12 years, drinking 100% of the time. Kendal’s drinking has decreased and he helps out all the time at the SRO. On days he is sober, he takes pride in cooking the meals for tenants. Without this house, Kendal says, “I’d be dead.”

The Homeless Action Committee (HAC) is dedicated to improving the lives of homeless people and advocating for permanent solutions to the problems of homelessness. HAC operates permanent Single Room Occupancy (SRO) housing for people who had been living on the streets for years and who suffer from alcoholism. This SRO has helped countless people to get off the streets, have a home, and begin making changes in their lives. HAC is also the proud operator of the Outreach Van program which assists hundreds of people on the streets each year by providing them with compassionate human contact, a listening ear, food, clothing, blankets, referrals and transportation to area services.
